At Priory School, we believe that every child and adult should feel that they belong, are respected and have the opportunity to thrive. Equality, diversity and inclusion are central to our commitment to Opportunity for All and are the responsibility of everyone in our school community.
We recognise and celebrate the diversity of our pupils, families, staff and wider community. We are committed to removing barriers, challenging discrimination and bias, and ensuring that our curriculum, policies, environment and decision-making reflect and support the community we serve.
Our work includes a clear commitment to anti-racism and to promoting equality across all protected characteristics. We want our children to grow into curious, hopeful and courageous individuals who value difference, treat others with kindness and challenge unfairness.
We work to ensure that:
pupils see a diverse range of people, families, cultures and experiences represented positively across school life and the curriculum;
all pupils can participate in learning, trips, clubs, events and wider opportunities;
barriers relating to disability, additional needs, disadvantage, language or personal circumstances are identified and addressed;
discriminatory language, prejudice and bullying are challenged;
pupils are helped to understand identity, fairness, respect and belonging in age-appropriate ways;
pupil, parent, staff and community voices contribute to the development of our school;
staff receive appropriate information and development to support inclusive practice; and
our policies and decisions are considered carefully to ensure that they promote equality and do not disadvantage particular groups.
In carrying out our work, Priory School has due regard to the need to:
eliminate discrimination, harassment, victimisation and other prohibited conduct;
advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not; and
foster positive relationships between different groups within our community.
Our equality objectives and action plan are informed by the experiences and views of our pupils, families, staff and wider community. We regularly review our progress and identify the next steps needed to make Priory an increasingly equitable and inclusive school.
Review of 2025–26, published September 2026
Next annual update: September 2027
At Priory School, “Opportunity for All” means working to ensure that every child belongs, participates, learns and thrives. Our diverse community brings a wealth of languages, cultures and experiences. Around 35% of pupils speak English as an additional language, and our 2026 assessment results show that these pupils generally attain well.
Our approach starts with knowing each child and responding to their individual needs. We adapt teaching and support, make reasonable adjustments and work with families to remove barriers to learning and participation. We aim to make trips, clubs and wider school experiences accessible, and our School Council, Eco Council and Play Leaders are broadly representative of our community.
Our monitoring identifies attendance as an ongoing priority, particularly for pupils with SEND and those eligible for pupil premium. Some pupils with additional needs also require more intensive support with behaviour. We review their needs and adapt our approaches, working with families and other professionals where appropriate. We have not identified a consistent pattern of behaviour concerns linked to ethnicity.
Equality, diversity and inclusion are central to our approach at Priory. We take racism, prejudice and all forms of discrimination seriously and respond in line with our behaviour policy. Alongside appropriate consequences and support for those affected, we use educative discussions and learning to challenge prejudice, develop understanding and prevent recurrence. We promote respect for different identities, cultures, faiths, beliefs and non-religious worldviews. Our monitoring and feedback from children and families help us identify concerns and take action where needed.
Our equality objectives and EDI action plan set out our priorities and planned actions. Further information about removing barriers is available in our Accessibility Plan and SEN Information Report.
We actively promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. These values are developed through our curriculum, assemblies, pupil leadership, relationships and everyday school life.
