    What is the School Council?

Our School Council gives pupils a voice in the life of Priory School. It is made up of pupils who have been elected by their classmates to represent their views, ideas and suggestions.

School councillors listen to the children in their classes, share their views at School Council meetings and help to think about ways we can make our school and our wider community even better. Being part of the School Council also gives pupils opportunities to develop important skills such as listening, speaking confidently, working as a team, problem-solving and representing others.

How are our School Councillors Chosen?

Our School Council elections take place once a year during the Autumn Term.

Pupils who would like to become a School Councillor prepare and present a short speech to their class, explaining why they would like the role and why they think they would be a good representative. Their classmates then vote to choose who they would like to represent them on the School Council.

This gives our pupils first-hand experience of democracy – one of the fundamental British Values – as they learn about standing for election, listening to different points of view, making their own choice and respecting the outcome of a vote.

    Living our Priory Values

Our School Council is also an important way for pupils to put our Priory values of Curiosity, Hope, Opportunity and Trust into action.

Councillors are encouraged to be curious about the views and experiences of others, have hope for positive change, make the most of the opportunity to contribute to school life, and build trust by listening to and representing their classmates fairly.

Through the School Council, we want our pupils to understand that their voices matter and that, by listening to others and working together, they can make a positive difference to their school.

    Visit to Parliament

In July 2026, our School Councillors were lucky enough to visit the Houses of Parliament in London.

During their visit, the children learned about the important roles of the House of Commons and the House of Lords and discovered more about how decisions are debated and made in Parliament.

One of the highlights of the day was having the opportunity to enter both Houses and watch live debates taking place. This gave our councillors a fantastic opportunity to see democracy in action and to make connections between what they had learned about Parliament and their own role representing the views of pupils at Priory.

The children also had the opportunity to meet Tan Dhesi, MP for Slough, and ask him their own questions. It was a valuable chance to find out more about the role of an MP and how elected representatives speak on behalf of the people in their local community.

The visit brought our learning about the British Value of democracy to life and encouraged our councillors to be curious, ask thoughtful questions and recognise the opportunities they have to make their voices heard.

We were incredibly proud of the way our School Councillors represented Priory throughout the visit.
